Erika Sturm Maplecrest, NY Mixed Materials

From the time I was a young girl I have been most content when surrounded by nature.

My work bench is on wheels so I can roll it out my studio door on beautiful days!

Inspired by the ever changing and endless gift of elements within our natural world, from the subtle textures within a patch of yellowy green moss, to a sublime starry night sky, my work is an expression of appreciation and wonder.

Each piece ultimately comes from this place of reverence, fully engaging my hand and heart, which is expanded when in the end it touches another.

Most of my work begins with sterling silver and or copper, wood or tagua nut with which I design a 'template'. I then bring various elements together by wrapping, soldering and or riveting.

My pieces are hand forged and textured free form with dapping, chasing tools and wire.

I often oxidize and brush pieces to enhance their relief. Recently, I have been enjoying wrapping for texture and vibrancy, with enamel coated copper wire.

Though having taken a class at Peter's Valley in my early years I am primarily self taught. My husband and I have been studying and working in our distinct craft for 20+ years.

Collaboratively, we attempt to reach our aesthetic vision using conventional and nonconventional methods thru experimentation, reading, and practice.

The exchange we share is both exciting and connecting often leading us to new creative discoveries.
