David Hinds • Springfield, IL • Soft Pastels

The sights and sounds of my childhood come to life in my artwork, whether it be my abstracted farm animals, cherished pets, or my local hero, Abraham Lincoln.

In 2015 a fork in the road life brought me full circle, returning me to an early love of art.

I was fortunate to have grown up 3 miles down the road from famed folk artist George Colin. His use of soft pastels nurtured my love of the simple little sticks of pure pigment.

The immediate bold and brilliant colors never cease to amaze me.

I generally start with darker colors first, adding lighter to develop the highlights. I cut hardboard panels to size and prepare them with a painted base with a nice tooth that allows me to build the layers of color.

Finding joy is the ultimate goal for me, but especially for the observer of a finished piece.
