Lisa Muller • Pottstown, PA • Ceramic Tile Sculpture

Life has a way of being complicated and simple at the same time and accordingly the tile imagery can be seen as straightforward or with layered meaning.

I think of my tile designs as ceramic snapshots; candid, though just part of a bigger whole. Imagery goes to a place where words cannot, and glaze on clay... well... there's nothing like it.

Ironically, for an audibly silent material, clay has an unusual power to communicate. From the start of my fascination with clay I've been pulled in by its' cool, plastic touch and held by its' promise of the unexpected. Because it contains the ability to be almost anything, I associate clay with adventure, transformation, and the possibility of making something from nothing. For many reasons, working this way is a form of gambling; the possibility of defeat being present in every success.
