Hadley Sedgwick • White Island, GA • Ceramic Sculpture

I approach my work primarily as a sculptor rather than a traditional potter. I build everything by hand and rarely use a wheel, which gives my pieces more uniqueness and individuality. Making things from this point of view gives me the freedom to try new techniques and work spontaneously.

The work itself is only one aspect of my business, I oversee all stages of the process, from the work to the photography to customer service and the shipping. Maybe one day I'll be able to have other people do some of these things for me, but it's been a invaluable experience to learn how to do these things myself.

My ceramic studio is located steps from my home on Whitemarsh Island, a small island off the coast of Georgia.

I designed the building and had it constructed when my husband and I bought our house in 2010. The studio is 240 square feet of workspace. Attached to the structure is a screened-in porch housing my kilns and shipping materials. The studio’s large windows overlook a vast marsh that inspires a sense of serenity and well-being--perfect for creative work!

I've been very lucky to establish a work space that is next to my home. It allows me to hold flexible work hours and attend to the many stages of the process throughout the day.
