Elsa Jo Ellison Wanamingo, MN • Felted Creatures

I have been sculpting wool from Ellison Sheep Farm into unique animals, dolls, Scandinavian items, and Santas for over 20 years. Currently I hand needle-felt all of my items without use of patterns and each one is a one-of-a-kind wool sculpture.

My artwork is 100% wool with the exception of a few chicken feathers on some wings or hats.

I do not use wire or any synthetic cores. Many colors of wool that I use are natural brown, gray, or white from my mother’s sheep, and we hand dye many colors.

My mother raises an assortment of Shetland, Icelandic, Gotland, and Lincoln crosses so the wool fleeces have a lot of variation in texture, and hand-dyeing the wool in small batches results in an extraordinary range of colors.

I frequently work looking at my exotic assortment of chickens and quail birds, dogs of 3 different breeds, a cat, my little brown pet bunny, Bertina, and her babies.
