Barbara Mathews • Janesville, WI • Watercolor

Shapes, color, values design, and my own passion for a subject, leads me through my paintings. I paint mostly in watercolor because, nothing can compare to the way the color moves on the paper.  However I also paint with acrylic, gouche, and casein.    I love to paint on many different surfaces. I use gesso to give texture, I like to paint on canvas and yupo; I also paint watercolor batik.

Pouring watercolors is all about values. I first mask off the lightest value and then literally pour paint that I have mixed in small jars on to the paper. Each additional value is handled in the same manner. I may paint with a brush for finish work. I love the way the paint paints itself.

A celebration of color…rich, vibrant, glorious pigments.  A need to constantly invent and search for new ways to see the world around me. From the center of a flower, to the way the light hits an object, the way the river looks differently every day, every season, and even every moment. My art is a never ending journey that gives my life so much joy.
